Western Algarve, twenty minutes apart, and laid out on ground that could hardly be more different. Palmares runs down toward Lagos bay with sea views for much of the round and a genuinely links-like stretch near the beach, so the wind has a say. Penina is flat farmland close to Portimão, tree-lined and quiet, built on old rice fields and playing far longer than the card suggests whenever it's soft. Palmares is the better day out for the setting. Penina is the steadier walk, and the one for a golfer who'd sooner not fight the wind.
