By November the fairways at home are mud and it is dark by mid-afternoon. These are the Algarve rounds worth building a week around, east to west.

1. Monte Rei Golf Course Vila Nova de Cacela, Faro, Portugal 18 holes

   The quiet eastern end, close enough to the Spanish border that most of the coast never reaches it.

2. San Lorenzo Golf Course Almancil, Faro, Portugal 18 holes

   Almancil, in the busy middle of the Algarve, and the one worth the tee-time scramble.

3. Quinta do Lago South Golf Course Almancil, Faro, Portugal 18 holes

   The other Almancil round, minutes away, so a week here needs barely any driving.

4. Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course Vilamoura, Faro, Portugal

   Vilamoura, the resort heart of the coast, and the easiest to fit around a family week.

5. Penina Golf & Resort Portimao, Faro, Portugal 18 holes

   Portimao, west of the resort strip, where the coast starts to quieten again.

6. Onyria Palmares Golf Palmares, Faro, Portugal 27 holes

   Just east of Lagos, near the western end of the run this list follows.

7. Boavista Golf Resort Lagos, Faro, Portugal 18 holes

   Lagos, the western end of the coast, and the last stop before the drive back east.
